Description:
Reading to understand the information contained in the texts supplied is very
important in this task. These texts are directly taken from published reports and they are not "specially" prepared to be used in schools. This makes the texts more real and interesting even though it might make them rather harder to understand.

ICT is an abbreviation for “Information and Communication Technologies”.

As in any task where the students are asked to solve problems, care should be taken with the procedure to be followed to solve them. The reasoned justification of the process used is also very important in this type of task and emphasis should be placed on this aspect.
Competences:
Solving, in a reasoned and critical manners, problems that require the use and interpretation of absolute and relative statistical data and/or statistical parameters.
Difficulty (1: low - 3: high):
1   Task type: Problems   Estimated time: 30 min.

Description:
A series of problems are set for this task. The specific nature of this task
is that this data is contained in a diagram from where it must be extracted.

As in any task where the students are asked to solve problems, care should be taken with the procedure to be followed to solve them. The reasoned justification of the process used is also very important in this type of task and emphasis should be placed on this aspect.
Competences:
Reading, carefully, and interpreting, critically, the statistical information contained in tables, graphs, diagrams or texts, and distinguishing between relative and absolute data (percentages, rates).

Description:
This task requires the students to write a report while taking into account
the data contained in a graph. A script is therefore provided so that the students can follow a series of guidelines to write the report irrespective of those aspects that the students wish to highlight. Even though the ideal would be that the students were able to prepare this report working on their own, it is more likely that they find it difficult to do so on their own. Therefore, you should be close at hand and help the students to at least be able to follow the script that they are given. Importance should also be given to the correct use of the terms and expressions used so they are applying the correct and appropriate ones.
Competences:
Reading, carefully, and interpreting, critically, the statistical information contained in tables, graphs, diagrams or texts, and distinguishing between relative and absolute data (percentages, rates).
Working on one's own, preparing a short report as a general interpretation of the data in a table and/or in a graph.
Difficulty (1: low - 3: high):
2   Task type: Research   Estimated time: 20 min.

Description:
This task requires the students to take into account the data provided in order
to define the majority profile of the user. The profile is defined as the set of maximum values for each of the variables. Therefore, the students just need to look for the characteristics with the maximum values and put them together. It is straightforward but requires the students to pay attention as they work. On the other hand, it is a type of task that can be entrusted to the students so that they work on their own.
Competences:
Using the central parameters to analyse and interpret a set of data.

Description:
This task explains the procedure to be followed to calculate the median and
the quartiles of a distribution and how to use those parameters to analyse the characteristics of the data collected in a distribution. This type of parameters is used when the values of a distribution are to be ordered in groups according to their place within an order that goes from lower to greater and/or vice versa. They are also used greatly when, as is the case in question, the aim is to analyse whether or not there are variations in the position in question within an ordered distribution. In this case, the students are asked to consider and discuss whether the different countries studied have moved from on quartile to another and what they can conclude from that fact or from its absence.
Competences:
Calculating the central parameters to analyse and interpret a set of data
Difficulty (1: low - 3: high):

Description:
This task seeks to analyse a series of data and the arithmetic mean is first
used as it allows the students to carry out a comparative study in this case of how the use average of this resource varies in the set of countries for which we have data. Even if the average increases, it does not mean that it does so in all countries or that it occurs in the same way. If you want to know whether the differences between the countries increase or decrease, you will have to use other parameters, in general, the deviation parameters considered in this question. In this case, the aim is for the students is to use the parameter known as average deviation for that purpose. In the task, the student is show how to calculate and what is more important, how to interpret those numerical values. If the average deviation increases, the conclusion reached is that the values are becoming more heterogeneous. If, to the contrary, the deviation decreases, the conclusion reached is that the values are getting closer and their set is more uniform. The important aspect of this task is that the students understand the functionality of these parameters and that they know how to defend correctly the conclusions reached.
Competences:
Reading, carefully, and interpreting, critically, the statistical information contained in tables, graphs, diagrams or texts, and distinguishing between relative and absolute data (percentages, rates).
Using the central parameters and deviation parameters to analyse and interpret a set of data.

Description:
In this task, the students are asked to use the data in a table to calculate
a series of parameters and then try to reach some conclusions about them. These parameters are the arithmetic mean and the mean deviation. The mean is a comparison in relation to the position of the different countries and the deviation enables the students to observe the degree of data uniformity. In each case, the students have to know how to use those values to analyse the distribution proprieties.
Competences:
Calculating and using deviation parameters to analyse and interpret a set of data.
Using the concept of correlation between variables to analyse the relations between data distribution pairs.
Difficulty (1: low - 3: high):

Description:
The errors on the first page are: - It is not that the 5 most mentioned are
directly related to the information. It is in the case of the first 3, but the 4th is www.ehu.es
- It is not true that the Caja Laboral is the most used website after those related with the press. This place is held by EHU.es
- It is not true that Caja Laboral went from 2.5% to 3% in that period and the actual situation is exactly the opposite.

The errors on the second page are:
- There is no data about 2004 in the table, so it is an error to refer to that.
- It is not true that its presence has tripled, the correct thing would be so say that “its presence has nearly doubled”.
- The figure for MSN is not 26%, but rather 2.6%
Competences:
Reading, carefully, and interpreting, critically, the statistical information contained in tables, graphs, diagrams or texts, and distinguishing between relative and absolute data (percentages, rates).

Description:
This is a task that can be considered to be straightforward in terms of statistics
work, as the data is read from the tables and the capacity of reaching any conclusions from them has already been widely considered. This should mean that the students are able to perform this task by themselves and without too much help from the teachers. They are not asked to calculate any parameter as the base for the analysis to be perform and the task is therefore easier. It should yet again be stressed to the students to take care with how they express their work.
Competences:
Reading, carefully, and interpreting, critically, the statistical information contained in tables, graphs, diagrams or texts, and distinguishing between relative and absolute data (percentages, rates).

Description:
This task provides information about the meaning of the most important position
parameters: the median and the quartiles.

In this task, the students are given a text “to study”, in the same way as in the summarising activities. Studying means using some learning strategies or techniques in order to process the information. It is proposed to use the following techniques for this task:
a) Read the text and any words or terms that are not understood.
b) Identify the concepts that are explained and defined; in this case they are: median and quartiles
c) Underline the definitions.
d) Create a glossary with the definitions
e) Memorise the definitions included in the glossary

A conceptual map is also supplied in this task where the most important central parameters are represented and the relationship between them is established. The work of the students consists of reading that map carefully and then trying to establish that map by using the definitions of the different concepts represented in that diagram. The final step is to memorise those definitions.
Competences:
Interpreting, summarising and memorising statistical data.
